Bats – What Should You Know About Them?

Bats are found in many parts of the world including Colorado.  They are usually seen only in the wild, however, since they feed on bugs and are nocturnal, they are at times found hanging on a house near a porch, or other outdoor, light.

In general bats are not only harmless to humans they are helpful in keeping insect populations down.  In fact according to Charlie Green contributing author at Colorado Central Magazine,

“Bats are beneficial for humans in numerous ways — nearly all of them involve eating insects. One bat can eat 600 mosquitoes an hour…The consumption of insects by a colony of bats will amount to hundreds of pounds of largely destructive insects, about half their body weight each day.”

That’s a lot of pest control!

Large bat colonies exist in Colorado, mainly because of all the access they have to caves.  To read more about bats, check out this article, Our bats go south for the winter, eat bugs in the summer.

If you are seeing droppings on or around your porch, you may have a bat visiting your house.  If you start seeing small bugs in the same area, you may have bat bugs. While bats are harmless to humans, bat bugs feed on blood and will bite humans and animals. If  you suspect you have bat bugs, contact this site.

How Safe Are Rodenticides?

Have you found yourself wondering: Are rodenticides safe? What can I do if I’m seeing mice – or mice droppings? What about my pets – can they be around rodenticides?

On the one hand, no one wants mice running around their house, but on the other hand, is it safe to use rodenticides at a residential structure?

According to Absolute Pest Control, rodenticides are effective on any warm-blooded animal such as dogs, and cats (and even humans).  Furthermore,

Rodenticides are an attractant. This means they will attract rodents to the bait. Therefore it is important, once you are no longer seeing signs of mice (such as droppings) to pick up all bait stations, seal them in a bag, and keep them in storage out of reach of pets or children.

Do You Have Voles In Your Yard?

Vole Damage

Typical Vole Damage-Copyright www.apcpestcontrol.com

The Voles have had their young and are very active at this time of year. However you may not notice any damage in your yard until the snow has fallen and melted. But rest assured, if you have had voles in the past, now is the time to get the yard treated.

In one of the most thorough articles I have ever seen on the subject of voles, John M. O’Brian says,

Voles are active day and night, year-round. They do not hibernate.

And he goes on to explain,

The most easily identifiable sign of voles is an extensive surface runway system with numerous burrow opening (Fig. 6). Runways are 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) in width. Vegetation near well-traveled runways may be clipped close to the ground.

Read this article, to learn more about voles and their habitat.

Do You Hear Squirrels In Your Attic?

Squirrel

If you  ever lay in bed and hear something rustling in the attic overhead, you may have squirrels in your attic.  These little critters can access through the smallest of holes, and they make a large amount of noise when they take up residence.

But other than the noise, what harm is having a squirrel family coexist with you?

As Marcus Pickett points out in his article, Squirreling Out Of A Mess,

Squirrels will tear up this insulation, shredding it to pieces and making it less effective. Shredded ductwork is also a likely outcome. With time, your attic will begin to emanate the foul odor of squirrel urine. Their burrows will also create an easy avenue for bats, insects, and other pests to enter your home or simply create a leaky roof.

This does not sound like a good situation. Once a squirrel has gained access to your attic, they can also chew through to the main living space of the house!

Read more of Mr Pickett’s article to learn how to avoid a squirrel problem at your house.

It’s Just a Mouse – Why Worry?

Mouse

Image via Wikipedia

Do you suspect you have a mouse problem? Have you seen mouse droppings in your house or found small amounts of chewed food or fabric in unlikely places?

When the days start getting shorter and the nights colder, mice begin to search for warmer places to live. This often results in people seeing mice, or signs of them, in their houses. Sometimes this happens in a house that has never before had a mouse problem.

So should you be concerned if you see signs of mice in or around your house?

Matt Goering says,

There are a number of reasons you should keep tabs on whether rodents are making themselves comfortable in your home. First and foremost, they are proven disease carriers. Be it the lethal hanta virus or salmonella poisoning, rodents and their feces are a prime carrier of diseases that can easily jump to the human population.

Read the whole article here and learn how to identify if you have a mouse problem, how to control them, how to dispose of them and what to do if you are unable to resolve the problem yourself.

Ultrasonic Bird Control Device

Ultrasonic devices claim to use ultra-high frequency sound waves to chase away birds, bats, rodents and arthropod pests like fleas, cockroaches, silverfish and even spiders. Most of them are designed to plug into an electrical outlet, but there are battery-operated models that have been designed as a flea-repellent collar and pocket-sized cards for outdoor lovers to carry around with them to repel mosquitoes. They range from cheap ($6.99) to very expensive ($699.00).
